Iberia · Spain & Portugal

The fire of Spain,
the light of Portugal.

One sunlit peninsula, two proud nations, and a scatter of volcanic islands far out in the Atlantic.

Our Home Ground

One peninsula, two souls.

Iberia is where Namara Tours keeps one of its homes. Our Spanish office is in Granada, so these are roads we travel season after season, alongside the local partners who make every journey feel personal.

Spain and Portugal share a peninsula and centuries of entwined history, yet each has a character all its own. Spain brings the fire: music, color and celebration that spill into the streets. Portugal brings the light: golden cliffs, tiled façades and an easy, unhurried grace.

Spain

Passion in every region.

Spain lives out loud. Flamenco in a Seville courtyard, candlelit processions during Holy Week, a whole town out for the evening stroll, fiestas that carry on long past midnight. Passion is part of daily life here, and it is a joy to be swept up in it.

Then there is the land itself, one of the most varied in Europe. Green Galicia and Asturias on the Atlantic, the Basque coast and the Pyrenees, the castles and wide plains of Castile, Gaudí's Barcelona on the Mediterranean, and Andalucía, with its Moorish palaces, white villages and the snowy Sierra Nevada rising above the sea.

The Canary Islands

Spain's islands in the sun.

Far south in the Atlantic, off the coast of Africa, the Canary Islands enjoy mild weather all year, and each island has its own personality. Tenerife is crowned by Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak. On Lanzarote, the artist César Manrique turned black volcanic fields into living art. La Gomera's ancient laurel forests cover the hills, and islanders still call across its valleys in a whistled language. La Palma offers some of the clearest night skies on Earth.

Columbus made his final stop on La Gomera in 1492 before sailing west to the Americas.

Ancient, golden and endlessly picturesque.

Portugal is one of Europe's oldest nations, its borders largely unchanged since the 13th century. From the riverbanks of Lisbon, its sailors set out to chart the sea routes to India and Brazil, and that spirit of discovery still lingers in the cobbled lanes and tiled façades. Ride the trams up Lisbon's hills, explore the fairytale palaces of Sintra, stand before the Roman temple of Évora and stroll the riverfront of Porto.

Nature here is just as captivating. Terraced vineyards climb the slopes of the Douro Valley, cork oaks dot the golden plains of the Alentejo, and the Algarve's ochre cliffs hide sea caves and quiet coves. In the far north, the mountains of Peneda-Gerês stay wild and green.

The Azores & Madeira

Portugal's islands in the Atlantic.

Far out in the ocean, Portugal's two island regions rank among the most beautiful corners of Europe. The Azores are nine volcanic islands on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge: twin crater lakes at Sete Cidades, steaming hot springs at Furnas, lanes lined with hydrangeas, whales and dolphins offshore, and Mount Pico, the highest summit in Portugal.

Madeira rises steep and green from the sea. Walking paths follow centuries-old irrigation channels, the levadas, through a laurel forest protected by UNESCO, and the island blooms with flowers all year. Its little sister, Porto Santo, adds a long golden beach.
