Italy

Snow-capped peaks above glassy lakes, hill towns wrapped in vineyards and islands set in a turquoise sea. Italy holds a lifetime of journeys, and we'll help you find the one that's yours.

Many Italys in One

Italy has been a single nation since 1861, yet every region still keeps its own accent, its own festivals and its own way of welcoming guests. A morning in Milan and an evening in Palermo can feel like two different countries, and that is the joy of it.

Our Italy moves at the pace of an evening stroll through the piazza. We pair the great sights, like the Colosseum and Florence's Duomo, with the moments that stay with you: a boat gliding toward Bellagio at dusk, a truffle hunter and his dog in the Umbrian woods, a choir's voices rising in a medieval church.

We've led our own groups along these roads, from the lemon terraces of Sorrento to the olive mills of Sicily, and every journey we design starts from that first-hand knowledge.

Where we wander: The Italian Alps · Lake Como · Lake Garda · Lake Maggiore · Milan · Tuscany · Umbria · Rome · Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast · Puglia · Calabria · Sicily · Sardinia

Northern Italy

Where the Alps Meet the Lakes

In the north, the mountains come down to the water. Glacier-carved lakes sit at the foot of the Alps, their shores lined with lemon houses, palm-shaded promenades and grand old villas, and Milan is about an hour away.

The Italian Alps & the Dolomites

Mont BlancCourmayeurCortina d'Ampezzothe Dolomites

Ride the Skyway's rotating cabins from Courmayeur up to 3,466 meters on the Italian face of Mont Blanc, or walk among the pale, jagged peaks of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Summer brings wildflower meadows and mountain huts with long views; winter brings crisp ski days in Cortina d'Ampezzo, co-host of the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Villa del Balbianello's terraced gardens on its wooded point above Lake Como

Lake Como

Bellagio · Varenna · Tremezzo · Villa del Balbianello

The most romantic of the lakes, ringed by mountains and lined with villas and gardens. Cruise to Bellagio by private boat, step onto the lakeside loggia of Villa del Balbianello, and walk the old Wayfarer's Path above Varenna for views down the length of the lake.

Sirmione's Scaliger Castle rising from clear blue water

Lake Garda

Sirmione · Malcesine · Limone · Verona

Italy's largest lake has a sunny, almost Mediterranean feel, with olive groves, lemon houses and castles at the water's edge. Sail from Sirmione, ride the cable car up Monte Baldo from Malcesine, and spend a summer evening at the opera in Verona's Roman arena, a short drive away.

Isola Bella's terraced baroque gardens seen from a boat on Lake Maggiore

Lake Maggiore

Stresa · Isola Bella · Isola Madre · Villa Taranto

Elegant and serene, with belle époque hotels along the shore at Stresa. Step across to the Borromean Islands, where Isola Bella's baroque palace rises from the water in tiers of gardens and white peacocks wander the paths of Isola Madre.

The Eternal City

Rome

The Colosseum · the Vatican · the Pantheon · Trastevere · Piazza Navona

For more than two thousand years, Rome has been called the Eternal City, and one walk through its streets tells you why. Stand inside the Colosseum, look up at the Sistine Chapel ceiling, and step beneath the open eye of the Pantheon's dome. Toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to promise your return, then let the evening carry you through the ivy-draped lanes of Trastevere and the golden light on Piazza Navona.

From Milan to the Islands

Head south and the light grows warmer, the pace gentler and the welcome even bigger.

The white marble spires and rooftop terraces of Milan's Duomo in warm evening light

Milan

The Last Supper · the Duomo · La Scala · the Fashion District

Italy's capital of style and the gateway to the lakes and mountains. See Leonardo's Last Supper, walk among the spires on the Duomo's marble rooftop, and spend an evening at La Scala. At aperitivo hour, raise a glass in the city where the Negroni Sbagliato was born.

A cypress-lined road winding over green Val d'Orcia hills at sunrise

Tuscany

Florence · Chianti · Siena · San Gimignano · Val d'Orcia

Renaissance Florence, cypress-lined roads and hill towns the color of honey. Stand before Michelangelo's David, then drive into the Chianti hills for a long lunch at a family wine estate. Further south lies the Val d'Orcia, a landscape Renaissance painters loved and UNESCO now protects.

The Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi glowing above the Umbrian plain at dusk

Umbria

Assisi · Orvieto · Perugia · Spello · Spoleto

Italy's green heart, and the only region with neither a coastline nor a foreign border. Walk in the footsteps of St. Francis in Assisi, see Orvieto's glittering cathedral on its cliff of volcanic stone, and head into the oak woods with a truffle hunter and his dog.

Positano's pastel houses tumbling down the cliff to the sea

Sorrento & the Amalfi Coast

Sorrento · Positano · Amalfi · Ravello · Capri · Pompeii

Lemon terraces, cliffside villages and a sea that shifts from turquoise to deep blue. Sail to Capri, walk the streets of Pompeii as they stood in 79 AD, and follow the Path of the Gods high above Positano. Back in Sorrento, a local family shares the secrets of limoncello among their own lemon groves.

Ostuni's white old town glowing above the olive groves at sunset

Puglia

Ostuni · Alberobello · Lecce · Polignano a Mare · Matera

The heel of Italy's boot, where whitewashed towns glow above olive groves, some of them a thousand years old. Base yourself in Ostuni, the White City, and explore the cone-roofed trulli of Alberobello, the honey-colored baroque of Lecce and the cliffs of Polignano a Mare. Just across the border lies Matera, where homes and churches are carved into the rock.

Tropea's clifftop old town above turquoise water, with Santa Maria dell'Isola on its rock

Calabria

Tropea · Pizzo · Scilla · Capo Vaticano · Reggio Calabria

The toe of the boot, warm, wild and wonderfully unhurried. Tropea's old town sits on a cliff above turquoise coves, with the church of Santa Maria dell'Isola on its own rock below. Visit the fishing village of Scilla, the bergamot groves that grow about 90 percent of the world's crop, and the ancient Riace Bronzes in Reggio Calabria. For many American families, this is also where the family story begins.

The ancient Greek theater of Taormina with Mount Etna rising behind it

Sicily

Taormina · Mount Etna · Palermo · Monreale · Cefalù · Agrigento

An island that has been Greek, Roman, Arab, Norman and Spanish, and wears every chapter proudly. Watch Etna steam behind Taormina's Greek theater, taste wine grown on the volcano's slopes, and stand beneath the golden mosaics of Monreale. Walk among the temples of Segesta and Agrigento, and in autumn, see olives pressed into bright green oil in the Madonie Mountains.

A turquoise cove framed by pink granite rocks in the La Maddalena archipelago

Sardinia

Costa Smeralda · La Maddalena · Alghero · Cagliari · Barumini

Clear turquoise water, granite islands and a culture all its own. Sail the La Maddalena archipelago, explore the Bronze Age stone towers called nuraghi, and hear the shepherds' four-voice singing, recognized by UNESCO. In Alghero, an old form of Catalan still echoes through the lanes, and in the mountain villages, people live famously long lives.
